Lest we forget

We were very proud that Amélie was asked to lay a wreath at the Remembrance Sunday memorial service at Wye Church on behalf of the Wye Beavers. Children from Spring Grove played the last post and at 11am there was a 2 minutes silence well attended by many from the village as Wye remembered its fallen from both Wars.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Amélie was asking why we have poppies so we talked about Flanders fields and I reminded her that she has visited Ypres and the Tyne Cot cemetery at Paschendaele twice already.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
